On July 16, 2009, Henry Louis Gates. Jr., arrived home from China where he was ostensibly researching the ancestry of Yo-Yo Ma for his silly, maudlin PBS television show Faces of America. Because of a previous break-in at his home, the front door was jammed. Because of a previous break-in at his home, a neighbor was alarmed when she saw him trying to force the door open, and called the cops. Because of a previous break-in at his home, the cops were alert to suspicious activity and drove straight over there.

Because Henry Gates thereupon acted like a rat terrier's asshole, they arrested him for disorderly conduct.

That should have been the end of the story – just another butthead who mouthed off to the cops and had his fingerprints taken because of it – except for the fact that Henry Gates is a Harvard professor and the director of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute for African American Research, which makes him an expert at race baiting, playing the race card, and creating a bogus hate crime for his own benefit.

He's a professional at this. He does this for a living.

Henry Gates was squealing about racism from the second the cops arrived. "Why, because I'm a black man in America?" he said when Officer James Crowley asked him to step outside, followed by "Ya, I'll speak with your momma outside!"

Then, after being arrested, he continued spinning the racial yarn as he was escorted to a police car: "Is this how you treat a black man in America?"

When you think about it, this was not a difficult situation. The cops were justifiably suspicious because of the previous break-in. All Gates had to do was show them his identification so they knew it was his house, and not be an asshole. How difficult is that?

The incident still would have failed to qualify for BogusHateCrimes.com if our first African American president, and harbinger of a "post-racial" society, hadn't jumped into the fray by mouthing off about it.

"Now, I've - I don't know, not having been there and not seeing all the facts, what role race played in that. But I think it's fair to say, number one, any of us would be pretty angry; number two, that the Cambridge police acted stupidly in arresting somebody when there was already proof that they were in their own home. And number three, what I think we know separate and apart from this incident is that there is a long history in this country of African-Americans and Latinos being stopped by law enforcement disproportionately. That's just a fact." - President Obama, 7/22/10

It's also a fact that race baiters view every single interaction between human beings as an opportunity to demonstrate a racial divide, whether that divide actually exists or not.

It's also a fact that Officer James Crowley was chosen by his black police chief to teach a course in race relations, so it's highly unlikely that he would evince racism toward Henry Gates.

It's also a fact that Crowley's black partner that day, Sergeant Leon Lashley, seeing the way Gates acted, backed Crowley's actions "100 percent."

This was just a routine arrest of a loud-mouthed butthead which blew up into a bogus hate crime and national embarrassment when the president got involved. Here's some advice for Obama: the next time you begin a sentence with the words, "not having been there and not seeing all the facts," don't go on to expound about who was stupid.

Because it might be you.
